A recent informal community survey on proposed sidewalk installations at a local traffic and road safety information session in the Grassyplain/Kopperfield neighbourhood has provided valuable insight into resident perspectives. Although overall support for sidewalks remains low, the survey saw significant support from certain streets, highlighting the importance of local democracy and diverse opinions within the community.
Resident Support for Sidewalk Installation is Low
A recent survey gauging resident support for sidewalk installation revealed extremely low overall support. 137 households participated in the informal survey and only 17 (12%) of total participants voted in favor of sidewalks.
Key Takeaways:
Overwhelming Opposition: The majority of residents (129) who responded to the survey oppose sidewalk installation. Only 12% (17) of those who participated voted "yes."
Strong Resistance on Certain Streets: Some streets showed particularly strong opposition, with Peggy Way, Blackburn, and Bellstone residents voting 100% against sidewalks.
Supportive Streets: Kopperfield Street, Kellogg and Grassyplain had the highest support for potential sidewalks with 70%, 67%, and 45% of participants voting in favour.
Response Rate: 33.5% of households in the neighbourhood participated in the survey at the information session.
Future Consideration for Kopperfield and Grassyplain: It is important to note that Kopperfield and Grassyplain are not considered interior streets, and may have consideration in the future to complete the existing sidewalk systems on these roads.

Overall Support for Sidewalks
A significant portion, 256 houses (66.5%), did not attend and/or respond to the survey.
Therefore, of the 137 households who attended and did the survey, 87% (112) did not want sidewalks on their street. Only 12% (17) of participants wanted sidewalks.
Note: numbers have been rounded to the nearest whole.
Kopperfield Street, Kellogg Avenue, and Grassyplain exhibited the highest levels of support for sidewalk installation. A significant percentage of residents on these streets voted in favor of sidewalks:
Kopperfield Street: 70% in favor
Kellogg Avenue: 67% in favor
Grassyplain: 45% in favor
This suggests reasonable support for sidewalks within these specific areas.
Conclusion:
The survey data has spoken loud and clear: the resounding majority of Grassyplain/Kopperfield neighbourhood residents are against sidewalk installations on their interior streets. Despite a lack of overall support, some streets (Grassyplain, Kellogg and Kopperfield) showed strong support for the initiative.
After the Councillor had discussions with City Leadership with the results of our survey, the City committed to respect the community's wishes and will NOT be installing sidewalks on any of the interior streets in this neighbourhood.
Unlike the other streets included in the survey, Kopperfield and Grassyplain are not considered interior streets. As such, they may eventually be considered again for sidewalk installations to enhance connectivity and complete existing sidewalk networks in those areas. Kellogg may also have sidewalks that come with future development.
